Question 1

Is this class safe and accessible for children?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Minors need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian (parents or guardians are not required to sign up, there are plenty of chairs in the studio to watch you child create!), but otherwise are fully capable of learning metalsmithing.

Question 2

Do I need prior experience?

Accepted Answer

No. This class is designed for absolute beginners. We will guide you through every step of the torch work and fabrication.

Question 3

Can I bring my own stone?

Accepted Answer

We provide specific 6mm round cabochons that fit our pre-made bezel cups perfectly. To ensure your success in this short timeframe, please use the stones provided.

Question 4

Will I finish both rings?

Accepted Answer

Most students finish both! If you find yourself needing more time on a ring to get the technique right, that is perfectly fine. The goal is to learn the skill, not just rush the product. We can also set up a time for you to come back so you can finish your piece.

Question 5

Is the soldering difficult?

Accepted Answer

We will be doing "Basic Soldering" using a torch. It requires focus, but we will teach you the specific temperature cues (visual color changes) to look for so you can do it safely and successfully. Advanced soldering techniques are covered in future courses.

Question 6

FOR MEMBERS: Will this course clear me to use the studio?

Accepted Answer

No. Everyone needs to take a separate 20-min orientation. Side note: we will not be going over how to set up our specific torches, which is a little complicated. (Both are free, just ask me about setting up a time to meet.)
