Community as Resistance: Reflections on the Murder of George Floyd
Join us for a moving conversation on how communities come together and stand strong in the face of injustice.
In the wake of Operation Metro Surge, the concept of “Neighborism” spread widely, and rightly so. We know the idea of “loving thy neighbor” is thousands of years old. Minneapolis has a long history of organizing, and we have a shared understanding that community is at the heart of resisting violence, oppression, and racism.
As the mantra goes, and as neighbors at George Floyd Square say: “We stay ready so we don’t have to get ready.”
At this monthly gathering, we will talk about community as resistance. We will reflect on the murder of George Floyd, six years later. What do we remember about 2020, and how did it change us? We will hear from the Executive Director of Rise & Remember, Jeanelle Austin, who plans the annual festival at 38th and Chicago each May to preserve the memory of George Floyd, conserve stories of resistance to racial injustice, and honor all stolen lives.
Small group conversation will be a part of this event.
About SWAE Gatherings: Every month, Southwest Alliance for Equity hosts a gathering that is open to everyone. It is a potluck -- bring something to share, if you would like. We believe that by increasing civic engagement in our community, we can effect political change. SWAE believes Minneapolis must strive for: communal well-being, equity, integration, health & safety for all, where opportunities and resources are shared and we repair injustice.
