Weaving With Fronds
Come hang out and learn cool weaving tricks using palm fronds—fun hands-on craft time!
Weaving With Fronds
Weaving and basketry are among the oldest forms of human expression, present since the earliest civilizations. Across cultures, these practices have evolved through the interlacing of plant fibers found in the surrounding landscape. Palm trees, abundant in tropical climates like ours, have long served as a vital resource—used to create baskets, hats, shelters, roofs, mats, and other everyday objects. In South Florida alone, more than fifty species of palm trees can be found.
In this workshop, we will approach palm as both material and language. Through a poetic lens, participants will learn basic palm-weaving techniques while exploring the patterns and geometries that emerge through repetition and structure. The workshop invites a way of working where the hand meets geometric thinking—where making becomes a form of reflection and expression.
We will consider weaving as a shared cultural practice, shaped and reimagined across time and place, and rooted in both utility and meaning. This material exploration is central to the practice of textile artist Isabel Infante, who will guide the session.
