Building True Math Fact Fluency in the Elementary Classroom
Accuracy, efficiency, and flexibility! Move beyond memorization with high-yield routines and games for year-long math success.
For years, math fact mastery has been synonymous with high-stakes timed tests and "mad minutes." But research shows that speed alone doesn't equal fluency. Join us for a transformative professional learning experience where we redefine what it means to be "fluent" and equip you with a research-based roadmap to build student confidence and flexibility.
In this session, we move past rote memorization to focus on the three pillars of true fluency: Accuracy, Efficiency, and Flexibility. You won't just hear about it. You’ll leave armed with a toolkit of games, visual routines, instructional strategies, and assessment ideas that you can use in your classroom the very next day.
What You’ll Experience:
- The Fluency Framework: Understand the trajectory of how students move from counting to derived facts to automaticity.
- The Instructional Toolkit: Learn how to facilitate Problem Strings, Visual Images, and Number Talks that bridge the gap between "knowing" a fact and "understanding" a relationship.
- Game-Based Learning: Experience a "Game Lab" of high-impact, low-prep activities that provide meaningful practice without the anxiety of a stopwatch.
- Assessment Reimagined: Discover how to use interviews, observations, and strategy-tracking to capture what students actually know—moving far beyond the limitations of timed tests.
The Year-Long Support System:
Your registration doesn’t end when the day is over! To ensure these strategies stick, this event includes four virtual one-hour "Fluency Huddles" throughout the school year. These 60-minute sessions provide a space to troubleshoot, share success stories, and receive fresh resources just when you need them most.
All virtual sessions will be held from 4:00-5:00 PM ET on the below dates. The facilitator will send a Zoom link for each session.
- September 15, 2026

- February 23, 2027
- May 11, 2027
