Black & White Darkroom Printing
Traditional Optical Printing in the Darkroom
This hands-on class focuses entirely on the craft of traditional black and white optical printing in the darkroom.
Students will learn how to take a black and white negative and transform it into a finished photographic print using professional darkroom equipment and chemistry.
During the class you will learn how to:
- Set up and operate a photographic enlarger
- Select and frame an image from a negative
- Control exposure and contrast for proper print density
- Work with traditional black and white photographic paper
- Develop, stop, and fix prints using darkroom chemistry
- Evaluate prints and make adjustments for improved results
Each student will produce a finished 8×10 black and white print by the end of the session.
Students are encouraged to bring one black and white negative with good density and contrast. If you don’t have a suitable negative, one will be provided and you’ll print from our archive.
This class is designed to give students a practical, hands-on introduction to the traditional darkroom printing process, the same method used by photographers for over a century.
You will leave with a finished print and the knowledge needed to begin printing your own photographs in the darkroom.
