Philadelphia-based artist Starkey, creator of "Street Bass," a genre blending hip-hop, grime, dubstep and club music, has been crafting bass-heavy, intergalactic, immersive soundscapes that stand out for their intricate complexity that merge a classical music background with refined music engineering, captivating passionate, forward-thinking audiences since 2005. He became the sole American producer featured on the legendary "Generation Bass" special on Mary Anne Hobbs' BBC Radio 1 show in 2008, his album "Orbits" was hailed by Pitchfork for its "classic synth grandeur" in 2012, and his 2015 release "The Transponder Orchestra" was named Bleep's Album of the Week.
His 2016 releases "Odyssey Five" and the original soundtrack "Charting Stardust" built upon the acoustic-analogue sound of his NOREMIXES imprint, keeping the bedrock elements of heavy bass and syncopated synthesized sounds. The 2019 New Theia series for Eat the Bomb incorporated expanded use of modular synthesis, and collaborations with Eligh (Living Legends / US), Miss Eaves (US), Mad Hed City (Trinidad & Tobago), and UK heavyweights Buggsy, Manchester Hypes, XP & Redders. His 2020 "Pulsar 2020Hz" release for Deadbeats blended classic hardcore elements into his unique sound. For the 2023 Elijah & Jammz "Make the Ting" (Starkey Remixes), he remixed every track from the pivotal grime release, two of which landed on Spotify's "Grime Shutdown" playlist. Soon after, he flexed old school hardcore breaks and rave stabs, working with Norwich-based producer CLYDE on the "Clydebot Ultra" EP for Los Angeles' Dome of Doom.
Starkey's work has been featured in commercials for British Airways, Adidas, GoPro, and Temple University, on shows including "Sense8" (Netflix), "Football Focus & Waterloo Road" (BBC1), "Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown" (CNN), and "20/20" (ABC), and in video games "Pro Evolution Soccer 2012", "Dirt 3," and "Crackdown 2." From producing and DJing to running the influential record labels Seclusiasis, Slit Jockey Records, and NOREMIXES, Starkey remains an unstoppable force in the evolution of music.
