Freedom at 250: From Revolution to Juneteenth — Who Was America For?

As the United States approaches the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we return to a central and enduring question: What did freedom mean in 1776 — and for whom was it intended?

“Freedom at 250” convenes leading Black thought leaders for a timely and illuminating conversation tracing the arc of American liberty from the ideals of the Revolutionary era through abolition, emancipation, and the promise of Juneteenth. Two and a half centuries after the nation’s founding, this forum explores how the language of liberty coexisted with slavery, how Black Americans expanded the meaning of citizenship, and how the unfinished work of freedom continues to shape our democracy.
