Explorations of Transformation

a BDEP Fundraiser

Hosted by Joaquin Jordan

Storytellers:

Janet Goodson

Tom Dearmore

What to Expect at This Event:

This is an invitation to show up bravely and engage. We challenge attendees to be more than an audience member. You will be asked to participate in a community discussion about the criminalization of people as well as the impacts of arrest and incarceration.

More About BDEP:

The Butte Defense Equity Project (BDEP)’s mission is rooted in the recognition that criminal justice is a community-wide issue; we believe that a careful, humane approach benefits everyone. We lead by example to close the gap between resources available to people who are poor, and those who can pay for their defense. This disparity is most devastating to Black, Brown, and Indigenous people, whose communities bear an inequitable brunt of excessive policing, prosecution, and sentencing policies.

Our collaborative team provides tenacious legal representation, advocacy and social work support to understand and address factors that may lead a person to come into contact with the criminal legal system. We work to minimize harm associated with system involvement, and provide holistic, trauma-informed support to remove barriers and help clients thrive.

More on Funds Raised:

Your financial support will allow BDEP to do the following:

  • Provide direct, holistic representation to people who have been arrested and are willing to do the work to change their lives;
  • Engage in thorough data collection to understand where our efforts can best be directed and to continually improve that understanding;
  • Increase outreach efforts throughout the region to generate support and understanding of the benefits of Holistic Defense;
  • Contribute to the cost of a new office space for our growing team.
