Shooter: From Vietnam Combat to Presidential Portraits
David Hume Kennerly has photographed history for more than 60 years. In 1972, he won the Pulitzer Prize in photojournalism for his coverage of the Vietnam War. Two years later, he was appointed as President Gerald Ford's personal White House photographer. Kennerly won the Overseas Press Club’s Olivier Rebbot Award for his coverage of the Geneva Summit. He received a primetime Emmy nomination as executive producer of “The Taking of Flight 847: The Uli Derickson Story.”
Kennerly is the author of seven books and producer of “Barack Obama: The Official Inaugural Book.” His latest book, “In the Room: Sixty Years on the Front Lines of History,” will be released in September. A large exhibition of his work, premiering in October, will be the first at the new Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library.
In 2019, the University of Arizona Center for Creative Photography acquired the David Hume Kennerly Archive and appointed him as the university’s first presidential scholar.
Kennerly is a trustee of the Ansel Adams Publishing Trust and a senior fellow at the USC Center on Communication Leadership and Policy.
