Foraging Invasives as Stewardship: Dame's Rocket // Saturday, May 9th
Join FOPOS for a special foraging volunteer session at the Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve.
Join the Friends of Princeton Open Space (FOPOS) and local experts Matt and Shannon for a Dame's Rocket Forage Walk at the Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve in Princeton.
In this engaging event, participants will delve into the world of the invasive plant, Dame's Rocket. Led by knowledgeable guides, you'll learn how to identify this invasive species -- and then we will get harvesting! We will work to remove Dame's Rocket in our pollinator garden since it is out-competing our native plants and decreasing biodiversity.
Prepare your taste buds for a culinary adventure! Sample a delectable recipe (compliments of Matt and Shannon) featuring Dame's Rocket, showcasing its potential as a flavorful ingredient in your kitchen. A recipe card will be included so that you too can make this unique and delicious recipe at home. Feeling creative? Channel your newfound knowledge and inspiration into crafting a beautiful throw-away bouquet (perfect for Mother's Day), showcasing the vibrant colors and textures of Dame's Rocket.
Participants: In the spirit of sustainability, please bring a bag/container for your Dame's Rocket harvest, your own plate and utensils for tasting the recipes, and a jar/vase for your bouquet. Please also dress for the woods! We recommend long sleeves, long pants, comfortable boots, and work gloves.
Meeting Location: Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve, 57 Mountain Ave., Princeton NJ 08540---we will meet at the main parking lot for this event and work in the pollinator garden located at the entryway of the Preserve.
