Overview

Explore Dynamic Detroit Midtown…the birthplace of historic preservation in Detroit!

On the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month, we explore Detroit’s exciting Midtown neighborhood, home to dramatic changes in recent years. Set on some of Detroit’s original French ribbon farms, this dynamic neighborhood became home to Detroit’s movers and shakers! Learn about its role in the early days of the automotive industry as well as its leading role in the city’s historic preservation efforts. See some of the city’s most cherished historic homes, cherished cultural institutions, renovated buildings, restaurants, and avant-garde businesses. Stroll along Historic West Canfield, enjoying the beautiful Victorian homes. Learn how Wayne State University evolved from within the halls of Central High School. From its days on the farm to today’s vibrant urban neighborhood, Midtown is full of distinctly Detroit stories.

Meeting spot: The tour departs from the Kitab Café, 422 W. Willis between Cass and Second. Please meet outside the front entrance.

Parking: Metered and non-metered street parking is available in the immediate area. Paid parking is also available on nearby surface lots.

Items to note about our tours:

THIS IS A WALKING TOUR. All guests should be prepared to walk, sometimes on surfaces under construction, for more than two hours.

All tours take place rain or shine and are about 2 to 2.5 hours long. Please arrive 15 minutes before the start of the tour. Advance ticket purchases are available through the afternoon before the tour. If there is a date missing from the tour page, the tour for that location/date is sold out. Tickets may be refunded up to 7 days prior to the date of a tour; after that, tickets are not refundable.

For information on booking private tours, please email info@preservationdetroit.org.

Note: Some buildings may have restricted access. Restroom facilities may be unavailable along the tour route.

By purchasing ticket(s), I confirm that I have read and agree to the terms outlined in the following liability release: https://preservationdetroit.org/liabilityrelease
