The Nick Hmeljak Group plays a free show at The Ship: An evening of all-star jazz in the classic lounge.

Nick Hmeljak is a trumpeter, band leader, educator, and composer living in Kansas City, MO. He completed his BM in Jazz Studies at Middle Tennessee State University in May of 2023 where he had the opportunity to study with local Nashville musicians from a variety of backgrounds including Jamey Simmons, Michael Arndt, Matt Endahl, and Jonathan Wires. During his time at MTSU he performed at the National Trumpet Competition in 2022, and started his career as a performing musician and educator in the Nashville area.

In 2023, Nick moved to Kansas City, MO to get closer with the roots of jazz history and immerse himself in a diverse landscape of artists. Nick currently works as a bandleader, sideman, and educator contributing to the Kansas City sound with the goal of developing a sense of community among listeners and musicians.

Free Jazz Thursday shows at The Ship are a good way to discover emerging local musical talent in a cozy, intimate setting. The shows are free to attend, but your donations are appreciated to help us offset costs and pay the performers. All seating is first come, first served, so please arrive early to get the best choice. The Ship is open all day and serves some of the finest food and beverages in the area.
