<h3>Learn More About Experiential Futures of Houston Energy</h3>For this year’s Earth Day, the <a href="https://si.rice.edu" title="https://si.rice.edu" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Rice Sustainability Institute</a> will partner with Rice Nexus’s Social Design Lab and the Los Angeles-based Situation Lab to stage an Experiential Futures (XF) workshop focused on possible futures for Houston’s energy industry.<a href="https://futuryst.blogspot.com/2018/10/experiential-futures-brief-outline.html" title="https://futuryst.blogspot.com/2018/10/experiential-futures-brief-outline.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Experiential futures</a> is a family of design practices that makes possible futures tangible, visceral, and navigable. Rather than discussing futures abstractly through reports or scenarios, these approaches create direct encounters—artifacts from tomorrow, immersive environments, participatory performances—that allow people to step into alternative worlds and explore them from the inside out. The goal is to activate imagination and expand our sense of what’s possible, helping communities and organizations develop richer, more grounded conversations about the choices we face and the futures we are creating.2026 is a fascinating moment to explore energy futures. Incumbent energy infrastructures and economies continue to exercise powerful influence over the making of energy futures. At the same time, innovation and transformation abounds, creating a variety of possible pathways toward energy transition. Nowhere is this truer than Houston. Houston was the undisputed world energy capital of the 20th century. At the end of the first quarter of the 21st century Houston remains an epicenter of incumbent industry while increasingly attracting firms (e.g., Fervo) at the cutting edge of envisioning new energy infrastructures and economies. Houston possesses unique human resources for imagining and shaping energy futures both in the United States and globally. With this initiative we aim to develop scenarios for Houston’s own possible energy futures over the next quarter century.The workshop will begin with a brief overview of XF methods and opportunities to practice them. Then we will focus on developing a series of plausible scenarios for Houston energy futures. Finally we will discuss how experiential encounters with those different futures scenarios could be materialized in ways that the broader Houston public could experience and engage with them. This workshop will focus mostly on ideation. But we consider it a first step toward a larger event or public installation which could be staged in 2027.<a href="https://futuryst.blogspot.com/p/full-bio.html" title="https://futuryst.blogspot.com/p/full-bio.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Stuart Candy</a>, the Director of the Situation Lab, will lead this workshop. Candy is a pioneer of experiential futures practices that increase the cultural capacity for foresight, via design, games and live interventions. His work has appeared worldwide in museums, festivals, conferences, and city streets, on the Discovery Channel, and in the pages of The Economist and Wired. As a foresight practitioner and educator, he has helped accelerate exchange and learning between futures and design, storytelling, social innovation, and enterprise.
