MANIC: a Y2K Fever Dream
Did you grow up on Britney Spears? Did you move to LA dreaming of your face in US Weekly? Then this comedy cabaret musical will speak to you
MANIC is a high-voltage one-woman show written, directed, & performed by Roxana Baldovin. A successful music video director, Roxana fuses cinematic pre-recorded sketches with live performance, blurring theatre and film into one electric experience. Through 14 wildly distinct characters - a burlesque mermaid, her Russian-speaking grandmother, a prophetic gypsy, and a drag-queen embodiment of her insecurities, for example, Roxana spirals through ambition, identity, and nurturing your inner child. As a millennial, it’s only natural she remixes early 2000’s pop hits & Broadway show tunes with a Weird Al zest, anchoring the show in y2k nostalgia. Campy, draggy, and visually bold, MANIC blends cabaret, stand-up, original music, and memoir into a glitter-streaked fever dream. Beneath the spectacle lies a raw question: which voices in our heads deserve the microphone?
one night only at the hudson theatre before she brings it to edinburgh fringe!
