SAMORY I

Samory-Tour Frazer, professionally known as Samory I, is a roots reggae singer hailing from Kingston, Jamaica. His voice has been described as unique and ethereal, and instantly evokes a wide range of emotions. An artist both in tune with the contemporary and appreciative of the classic, Samory I is well aware of the pairing of “Roots & Reality” and his impassioned vocals often carry exalting messages with a spirit of rebellion.

Samory I grew up in Kencot, a rougher neighbourhood in Kingston, and was named after Samory Touré, a successful African ruler who fought against European colonization in the 19th century. Like his namesake, Samory I is a voice for the voiceless with messages of hope, pain, resilience, and love for the people. Samory I plants his feet firmly, grounded and confident, in a new era of roots reggae music where boundaries are limitless. His lyrical consciousness and distinct emotive vocals resonate with fans across the globe.

Samory I has always had a passion for music. As a child, he sang every day. An ardent churchgoer, he performed at many church functions and brought the congregations to tears on many occasions. With the release of his 2017 debut album Black Gold with Jamaica’s renowned producer Rory "Stonelove" Gilligan, Samory I became a household name in the Reggae world. The album received rave reviews and resulted in his breakout single “Rasta Nuh Gangsta” (over 10M views on YouTube & 6M streams on Spotify), and featured singles “Black Gold,” “Son of David,” and more.

Samory I has landed features on two GRAMMY-nominated reggae albums: Jesse Royal’s Royal (2021)for their collaboration “High Tide or Low, ” and Protoje’s album Third Time’s The Charm (2022) for the closing track “Heavy Load. ” In 2022, Samory I released “Life Is Amazing” featuring dancehall star Chi Ching Ching, and “Love and Mercy'' off the Gratitude Riddim compilation (produced by GRAMMY-nominated Winta James), which became one of his most-streamed tracks to date. Since then, Samory I has continued to work with James, culminating in the critically acclaimed release of Samory I's 2023 album Strength.

The album was included on Rolling Stone Magazine’s 100 Best Albums of 2023, and voted Best International Album 2023 by RIDDIM Magazine readers, with producer Winta James also earning Producer Of The Year. Samory I has consistently toured Europe every summer playing on major festivals such as Reggae SummerJam, Reggae Geel, and Rototom Sunsplash, as well as playing the club circuit. Samory I, in the prime of his life, is convinced that he has been summoned by the Almighty God, with his God-given talent to be a voice of Jah to the people, proclaiming that reggae music is indeed the music of the King and a voice from God ready to guide and deliver His people.

DJ SMOKY (KING OF KINGS)

Born in Oakland, California, DJ Smoky, known for the infamous Yard Slap Remix, cut his teeth DJing 90s vinyl hip-hop. In 2002, he started King of Kings Reggae Sundays, the longest-running weekly reggae party in the Bay Area to this day!

His DJ career has taken him from the VANS skateboard tour, to the US Olympic snowboard team, to representing the One Blood Sound as Tour DJ for Cutty Ranks, JR Reid, Gang Starr, and most recently The English Beat!

Celebrating his birthday on August 21st, DJ Smoky reunites with his brother of 25 plus years, DJ Jacques, to host and DJ the first and only Bay Area appearance of Samory I & Wisedem Band, followed by a party til closing!

DJ JACQUES (WBLK DANCEHALL MASSIVE)

Originating from Boston, Massachusetts, DJ Jacques has represented the Bay Area with the WBLK Dancehall Massive since 1994. In May of 2001, he founded Monday Night Edutainment in Sebastopol, Sonoma County, California, one of the longest-running weekly dancehall events in the world. A deep passion for DJing with different styles and genres gave birth to curated Edutainment sets that interweave Reggae, Dancehall, Tropical Bass, and Hip Hop.

Now living in Boston again, DJ Jacques returns for his yearly pilgrimage to Reggae On The River and joins forces with his brother of 25 plus years, DJ Smoky, to celebrate Smoky’s birthday, host and DJ the first and only Bay Area appearance of Samory I & Wisedem Band, and rock the party right all night.
