Join EBMUD staff for a guided Water Walk exploring the Upper San Leandro Dam and Reservoir! This informative and scenic hike will cover key aspects of watershed management, infrastructure, and environmental stewardship in the East Bay.

Details

  • The walk will begin at 8 a.m. sharp and we aim to return by 12 noon.
  • There is no cell phone service in the parking area or along the route.
  • Park at Chabot Staging Area at 17292 Redwood Rd, Castro Valley, CA 94552 https://maps.app.goo.gl/Rvi11GVbDYQQJiHe6
  • Driving Directions: From 580 exit on Redwood Road in Castro Valley Head North on Redwood Road for 3.6 miles. Turn onto Miller road and follow the main road into the Chabot Staging Area entrance. Look for event staff and signage to check in.
  • We recommend arriving at least 10–15 minutes early to ensure a smooth start.

Location & Route
We’ll begin at the Chabot Staging Area and hike along a private section of Miller Road on an out-and-back route.

  • Distance: Approximately 6 miles round trip (3 miles each way)
  • Terrain: fire road
  • Pace: Moderate (~2 miles per hour)
  • Please Note: This is not a beginner hike. Participants should be able to keep up with the group for the full duration of the event. The route includes uneven terrain and uphill sections.
  • There are outhouse bathrooms at Chabot Staging Area and near the dam.

What should I bring?

  • Water, snacks, sun protection.
  • Wear sturdy shoes and comfortable hiking clothes.
  • No drinking water will be available on site — please bring plenty of your own water.
