Exclusive Founder's Tour @ AUTOPHOTO: Photobooth Gallery & Museum
New York Adventure Club | www.AdventureClub.com
Long before the smartphone, the photobooth offered something rare: a private space to be seen exactly as you are. What began as a mechanical marvel in 1925 has since evolved into a cultural time capsule — bringing together generations of faces, stories, and fleeting moments across decades. It's time to step inside one of the country’s most expansive collections of fully functioning photobooths to uncover the craft, history, and magic behind the curtain.
Join New York Adventure Club for an exclusive tour at AUTOPHOTO, a one-of-a-kind museum space dedicated to the history, artistry, and mechanics of the photobooth.
Led by Breanna Conley Saxon, photobooth preservationist and founder of AUTOPHOTO, our unique experience — before the space opens to the public — will include:
- A guided tour through 100 years of photobooth history, from its invention by Anatol Josepho to its lasting cultural impact
- A look at rare and never-before-seen artifacts, including an original c. 1925 photobooth camera and archival photographs of its inventor
- A showcase of iconic photobooth imagery, featuring candid celebrity strips with figures like Jackie Chan, Britney Spears, Serena Williams, and Liv Tyler
- An inside look at a working photobooth, exploring its mechanical inner workings and analog photographic process
- Insights into photobooth preservation and craft, highlighted through The Photobooth Technicians Project and a stop-motion film by Rachel Rowe
Afterward, you’ll get to step behind the curtain and create your own photobooth strip to take home!
See you there!
*Your ticket includes one complimentary photobooth strip, with the opportunity to skip the line and continue shooting additional strips (pay-per-strip)
About AUTOPHOTO
Since 2009, we’ve been dedicated to preserving the magic of vintage photobooths — mechanical marvels that capture moments in real time, on real photographic paper. We revived the AUTOPHOTO name to honor the legacy of the original manufacturer, who once distributed booths worldwide.
What began as a passion project has grown into a national mission fueled by craft, curiosity, and a love for analog photography. Proudly women-run, we don’t just restore booths; we reclaim a rare art form — mastering mechanics, chemistry, and the hunt for scarce parts to keep these few surviving machines alive.
With fewer than 200 working photobooths left worldwide, we believe it takes a community of owners, technicians, and fans to keep this tactile, timeless art form alive and accessible to everyone. That’s why we actively collaborate—sharing knowledge, sourcing rare parts, and supporting one another—to ensure the legacy of photobooths continues for generations to come.
