From Pens to Parlors: An Architectural Tour of a 1799 NYC Historic Landmark
Join us for a First Friday and explore a landmark building where animals once lived in pens and people later frequented salons!
Join us for our First Fridays series on May 1, 2026!
This month, explore a landmark building where animals once lived in pens and people later frequented salons. Our building is a surviving example of both a carriage house from 1799, its original use, where animals lived in a barn and pens, and a day hotel from 1826, its subsequent use, where middle-class New Yorkers frequented the building’s newly installed salons.
This tour will trace the architectural evolution of the structure, including certain interior and exterior design elements, and look at the many uses that took the building from carriage house to day hotel, to soup kitchen, and finally a museum.
