Queer Ecology Walk w/ Natalia Reagan & Jason Wise!
Challenging western cultural biological expectations and how we can reimagine our relationship w/ nature.
**Exact meeting location will be emailed 2 days before the walk**
QUEER ECOLOGY--the study of everything in nature that subverts western cultural expectations about how the world *should* work--is here to help us reconnect to the urban ecological landscape and reimagine our relationship to nature, eachother, and ourselves.
The walk is led by naturalist and environmental educator Jason Wise (aka @jasonjourneyman) to talk about the beautiful rainbow of diversity found in nature that enables so many unique ecosystemson this planet not just to survive, but to thrive.
On the very special queer ecology walk we will welcome Natalia Reagan (aka @natalia13reagan), a biological anthropoligst to fully deep dive into the world animal homosexuality, bisexuality, asexuality, poly, and the list goes on!
Did you know there are over 1500 species that have been documented engaging in homosexual behavior?! And this includes many native Californian critters! We’ll talk about the iconic lesbian western gulls of Anacapa Island, fabulously queer western fence lizards, homosexual harbor seals and elephant seals and more!
The natural world does not subscribe to any particular human culture, it exists as a beautifully diverse tapestry of ways to survive and thrive--individualistic or communal; patriarchal or matriarchal; heterosexual, homosexual, or in the case of most flowers, bisexual. We will observe, share, and learn about nature in ways that reflect our own diversity, and connect to it on a whole new beautiful level.

Jason Wise (aka @jasonjourneyman) is a certified California naturalist, outdoor and online environmental educator, a native plant daddy, and prolific tree hugger with a Master's in Environmental Policy. He teaches about native and invasive plants, connected ecosystems, the ecological history of California, and how we can all leave it better. Let's grow community together from nature. jasonjourneyman.com
Natalia Reagan (aka @natalia13reagan) is a biological anthropologist, comedian, professor, frequent animal expert, showgirl, and monkey chasing weirdo. Natalia has been a comedy writer and correspondent on Neil deGrasse Tyson’s StarTalk, regular host of the StarTalk All-Stars podcast, an animal expert on Nat Geo Wild’s Everything You Didn’t Know about Animals, and podcaster for Scientific American’s Science Quickly. Your dad has probably seen her on on History’s Unbelievable & UnXplained, Travel Channel’s Paranormal Caught on Camera, or co-hosting Spike TV’s 10 Million Dollar Bigfoot Bounty. Before becoming a scientist, Natalia was an actress and comedian. It took getting hit by her own ‘94 Ford Ranger on the shoulder of the 101 freeway (she survived, the truck did not) for her to go back to school to become an anthropologist. For her master’s fieldwork, she conducted a survey of the Azuero spider monkey in rural Panama- these results are currently being used in reforestation efforts in Los Santos, Panama. After grad school, Natalia began producing science comedy videos in her garage covering such titillating topics as the evolution of boobs, butts, balls, and Bigfoot. Natalia believes comedy is ideal for democratizing science. She also performs burlesque as Prof. Eva Lution, urging audiences to come for the tatas and stay for the science! In June, Natalia took her science comedy variety show “Survival of the Filthiest” to the UK’s Glastonbury festival and performs the show regularly around LA- come check it out! Natalia currently lives in her hometown of LA and produces science comedy content for herself and others while her hyper-critical pug, Raisin, quietly judges from her throne of lies (the couch). nataliareagan.com
