How Young Georgians See the Future, and What We Must Learn

This webinar is a conversation with young Georgian scholars and activists, who have themselves resisted the entrenchment of authoritarianism

A single political party captures the state. It changes the course of the country, restricts civil liberties, and gives up on a democratic future. It uses political violence against its own citizens. It puts pressure on universities, threatening to dismantle or defund them if they refuse to follow orders from above. This may sound like a nightmare scenario for any democratic country, but over the last few years, it has become reality in Georgia.When the Rose Revolution took place two decades ago, young Georgians envisioned a European future. They engaged in political and social life, giving birth to a vibrant civil society, strengthening democratic institutions, and developing protections for the rule of law. In the South Caucasus and beyond, Georgia’s path of democratic reform became a notable exception and an example for many to follow.But then, an oligarch and his party captured the state. They consolidated economic power, restricted civil liberties, and gave up on a democratic future. When universities dissented, the government threatened to dismantle or defund them. And when Georgians came out to protest, the government decided to use violence against its own citizens. The situation has deteriorated beyond democratic backsliding – it has become dictatorial drift.This webinar is a conversation with young Georgian scholars and activists, who have themselves experienced and resisted the entrenchment of authoritarian rule in Georgia. Focusing on the future, it aims to paint a picture of the constraints and opportunities that they face today, and to articulate a vision for a better tomorrow.As protests continue in Georgia, is this story becoming part of a wider wave of youth-led protest movements that have emerged across the globe in the last year?Information about speakers is forthcoming.
