Learn which "weeds" are beneficial - and edible - in your own yard!
Spring is one of the most abundant and rewarding times for foraging. In this workshop, we’ll shift our perspective from “weeds” to wild allies—learning to recognize edible and medicinal plants as they emerge across fields, paths, and garden edges. Together, we’ll practice ethical foraging, plant identification, and mindful harvesting, exploring which plants are plentiful enough to gather, which should be left to support the ecosystem, and how to engage with the land in a reciprocal way.
As we move through the edges of the gardens and surrounding spaces, we’ll observe natural plant communities and the patterns of succession that shape them. Along the way, we’ll discover what’s ready to harvest in early spring and discuss how these resilient plants contribute to soil health, erosion control, and biodiversity—deepening our understanding of how foraging can be both nourishing and ecologically supportive.
Your Teacher
Alison Magill is an herbalist, ecologist, gardener and educator who loves to help people take a new look at their gardens through an ecological lens. She holds degrees in Soil Science and Forest Ecology from UNH but has learned the most by observing the natural world. She is the Staff Educator at Bedrock Gardens where she gets to share her love of plants and nature with all of you!
Tickets
Tickets are are $15 for members (with member discount code) and $25 for non-members which includes a full day pass to the gardens. This series is recommended for teens and adults.
Cancellations: If you are unable to attend, please let us know 48 hours in advance of the class start time in order to receive a refund.
Weather Related Cancellations: We will assess the weather the morning of the workshop and send a notification to all attendees if extreme or severe weather is forecast.
