Learn five distinct value levels using charcoal and chalk to create value on a single object. Materials provided!

Drawing Light & Shadow: Value Studies with Charcoal and Chalk

Led by Juan Sebastian Restrepo

$25

All Materials Provided

Drawing Light & Shadow is a hands-on workshop focused on developing the ability to read and render values through light and shadow using a variety of dry media. Participants will explore a single simple object, first breaking its tones into three value areas, then refining to five distinct value levels.

Using compressed and soft charcoal, chalk, and erasers, attendees will experiment with contrast, edge control, and textural effects, learning how to model form convincingly while maintaining expressive mark-making.

The workshop emphasizes observation, structure, and material exploration over perfection! All levels welcome.

Participants will:

• Understand the role of value in creating depth and form

• Simplify complex objects into three-value and five-value tonal studies

• Experiment with compressed and soft charcoal and chalk for varied textures

• Learn blending, lifting, and erasing techniques to manipulate values

• Develop confidence in handling dry media for both subtle and dramatic effects
