On Saturday, March 28th from 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM at the Schmidt Center Gallery, artist Daesha Devón Harris will teach you how to create Memorial Still-lifes &amp; Commemorative collages.The Schmidt Gallery is located inside the Performing Arts building. <h4>Free parking is available at Garage 2 by the lake.</h4>Map: https://maps.app.goo.gl/bxYaktY7HZ6mqtXG9 This is a free workshop, but donations are appreciated. Workshop Deatils:This delightful workshop will explore the art of collage and guide participants in the creation of a well-crafted, memorial still-life as an intimate way to honor, celebrate and preserve memories of a loved one or personal hero/inspiration. Guests will engage in elements of visual storytelling and the creative possibilities of mixed media materials through the construction of personalized still-lifes. Through hands-on, guided projects, participants explore image application methods, the inclusion of cultural specific symbols and imagery, and innovative approaches to combining materials. The workshop challenges participants to tell a story, evoke memories and draw meaning from everyday objects, natural imagery and cultural traditions. Creating lasting, multifaceted artworks that honor the vibrancy of your unique person. The artist/instructor will share insight and anecdotes into her art making practice and how she incorporates, meaning, symbolism and memory into her own work.All materials are provided but if you would like, you can bring<ul><li>fabric scraps</li><li>ribbon</li><li>magazines/pages old books/pages old letters</li><li>(2-D) memorabilia</li><li>Ephemera specific to the subject of your piece</li></ul>About the artist:Daesha Devón Harris is an interdisciplinary visual artist whose work probes the interstices of narrative, history, the politics of place, and the greater African Diaspora, intertwined with photography, mixed media, text, and video. The gentrification of her hometown of Saratoga Springs, New York, and its effect on the local Black community, has played a major role in both her advocacy and artwork.Harris holds a BFA in Studio Art from the College of Saint Rose, and a MFA in Visual Art from the University at Buffalo, and her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States. Harris has received various awards, honors, and fellowships, and her work has been featured in a number of publications and books. Harris was a grantee of the Pollock-Krasner Foundation; a recipient of the Aaron Siskind Foundation Fellowship; a New York Foundation for the Arts Artist’s Fellow in Photography; and has participated in artist residencies across the country including the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts; Yaddo; and the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology. She is a returning Senior Visiting Fellow at Skidmore College’s MDOCS Storyteller’s Institute and was named as one of the Royal Photographic Society’s Hundred Heroines.
