International Anthem Spring Residency: Tromblau &Friends

International Anthem Spring Residency: Tromblau &Friends

Overview

International Anthem hosts inaugural resident musicians, Tromblau &Friends, at The Land School for experiemental workshop perfomances.

Our creative partner-in-residence, International Anthem, is proud to present a spring 2026 performance residency with Tromblau &Friends at The Land School on Wednesdays, April 15th, April 29th, and May 6th from 7 to 10 PM.

Emma Blau, "Tromblau," is a Chicago-based trombonist, composer, DJ, and Jewish Educator born and raised in New York City. In May 2022, she created Tromblau &Friends, a collective playing her original compositions informed by Black American Music, Jewish Music, and Liturgy (avodah). The band includes Dakarai Barclay (trumpet), Carmani Edwards (bass), Indigo (vocals), Max Lazarus (sax/flute), Jonah Lazarus (drums), and Julius Tucker (keys).

Over the course of their residency at The Land School, Tromblau &Friends will engage with development of their Beis Music project. “Beis Music,” (beis is the traditional Ashkenazi pronunciation of the Hebrew word for house), is a new library of music fusing Jewish Music (i.e. Klezmer, Cantorial, Liturgical, Nusachim Traditions) and Black American Music (i.e. House Music and Jazz) to activate movement building both through politics and dance. Beis Music follows Chicago’s legacy of House Music which has offered sanctuary and spirituality to those who were excommunicated from their communities. It is music that creates synagogue for the unsynagogued, as House is church for the unchurched; a synagogue that is inseparable from the liberation of Queer BIPOC. Amidst relentless grief, Beis Music is kol simcha, the sound of joy resonating from an event that revels in the relief and enlivening experience of an empowering togetherness (chedvah) of choosing each other. It is an option for Jewish cultural and religious expression that refuses the manipulation of Jewish trauma, history, and ethics to justify violence, Jewish Supremacy, war and genocide.

This three-date residency is the first of its kind for International Anthem since relocating into Theaster Gates and Rebuild Foundation's radical new Southside Chicago arts, archival and music hub, though the presentation format harkens the earliest embryonic days of the label's beginnings as organizers and promoters of developmental creative music events on weeknights in Chicago neighborhood venues.

Doors for each event open at 7 PM, with two sets beginning shortly after, and the program ending promptly at 10 PM. These events are open to all with a $15 suggested donation for those who are able. Space is limited.
