The Notts Peoples's Charter: Mobilising Day ⭐

The Notts Peoples's Charter: Mobilising Day ⭐

Himmah HubNottingham, England
Saturday, Apr 11 from 11 am to 4:30 pm
Overview

It’s time to start building. Come be a part of the new chartist movement for a new politics in Notts and the country as a whole.

Let’s start building! Come join Resolve Notts and Our House for a day of stories, snacks, and workshops where we’ll learn methods for and plan the building of the Notts’ People’s Charter.

💚 🏹 ❤️

What is a People’s Charter?

Politics is broken, and democracy is under threat. We know that the answers to our problems are not in Westminster, but in communities up and down the country.

People’s Charters in the UK have been used twice before, spurring popular movements, to change the way that people in the country participate in democracy. We face too many challenges to just campaign on single issues - but we can change all of them if we change power and how it works. If we create a democracy with which we have a meaningful relationship.

Ultimately, building a People’s Charter is an exercise in translating your values into systemic solutions that facilitate those values in the world around you. What does your community value? Is it visible in our democracy today?

What will happen at the event?

This event is a joint effort between Resolve Notts and Our House to launch the new chartist movement in Nottingham, where we will:

  • Connect with the wider Notts and Midlands community power builders
  • Share stories of chartists past and present
  • Learn how to facilitate, build, and campaign for People’s Charters to win power for the people
  • Share insights on what’s working, and what can be improved in bringing positive change to Nottingham
  • Have some food, share joy, meet people and mobilise a plan for a concerted charter writing effort across the area

If you can only attend for part of the day - that's fine! The day will consist of three main themes, times below:

  • Chartism + Facilitating the Charter Process (11 - 12:30)
  • Bringing this home to Notts (12:30 - 1:40)
  • Mapping and Planning the Notts People's Charter (2:30 - 4:15)

Who is this event for?

We’re gathering local organisers, leaders, everyday changemakers, facilitators, participatory democracy practitioners, and people keen for a day of charter-building mobilisation and training! If you’re interested at all in resetting our democracy and meeting people to do it with you - this event is for you.

About the Hosts

Our House is a new movement for crowdsourced, people-powered democracy. That means we’re trying to restore power to the people, through a new chartist movement championing participatory democracy methodology and values. We’re a core team of incredible participatory democracy practitioners and organisers and are connected with a growing network of organisers and volunteers across the four nations.

Resolve Notts is an organisation formed in January 2024, in response to Nottingham City Council’s drastic and poorly consulted budget cuts. Since then - Resolve has had massive success in campaigning to roll back the cuts. They’ve built an enthusiastic and effective network of residents and work generally to protect the most vulnerable people in the greater Notts community and make the city a better place to live for everyone.
