Clare Battering Steps Workshop with Caitlín Nic Gabhann (All Welcome!)

Founded in 2025, our purpose is to preserve, promote and pass on the living traditions of Irish music, dance, language, storytelling and the broader arts across Greater Boston. Our principal event is Tunes on the Charles, held at the end of April each year. We serve as a cultural bridge--connecting local communities to global Irish arts networks. Through education, performance, archival collaboration, and artistic exchange we nurture an inclusive and intergenerational space where heritage and innovation thrive together within the tradition. We aim to build not only a platform for cultural celebration but also a lasting network of relationships that strengthen Irish identity, creativity, and community across the diaspora.

<p>In this class, I’ll go through the movements of a set: house at home, around the house, advance retire, lead around, etc. I’ll also go through what you can do with your feet as you go through these movements in the set. I learned these movements and steps from my mother and her side of the family. Her parents were set dancers from West Clare, where there’s a richness in what you do with your feet as you move around the set. Some call it “battering,” or gliding, depending on your style and where in Clare you come from. Many of the steps you’ll see danced in sets I also dance solo. It won’t be necessary to have a partner for this class, but we may pair up in waltz hold so you can try the steps with a partner.</p>
