THE DRESSER, the Tony- & Oscar-Nominated Backstage Dramedy, presented by The Tavern Brawlers with The Santa Clarita Shakespeare Festival

"I don't wish to hurry you, Sir. No, I lie. I do." This acclaimed dramedy follows an aging actor playing King Lear and the loyal assistant struggling to get him onstage as bombs fall around them in war-torn England.

THE DRESSER presented by The Tavern Brawlers

Backstage at an English theatre during WWII, the last of the great breed of travelling Shakespearean actors – the elderly “Sir” – is finally wearing down, while his valiant assistant Norman tries to dress him for King Lear. Unsure of his lines as well as the role he’s supposed to perform, Sir is still determined to roar onto the stage, despite an air raid courtesy of the Luftwaffe. Written by Ronald Harwood (Quartet and the Oscar-winning The Pianist) and based on his own experiences, THE DRESSER is a heartbreaking and witty elegy to a by-gone era, highlighting the sacrifices made for art, and the poignant bond between two stubborn, dedicated artists.

Directed by Marlowe and Calliope Weisman and produced by The Tavern Brawlers, the team behind The MAIN’s productions of A Couple of Blaguards, Steve Martin’s The Underpants, and Harold and Maude.
