Behind the Flow: A Buckman WRF Facility Tour
This event will provide an inside look at the operations of JEA’s largest water reclamation facility.
Join us on April 17, 2026, from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM (EST) for an exclusive JEA Buckman Wastewater Treatment Plant Tour hosted at
📍 JEA Buckman WRF | 24000 Talleyrand Ave, Jacksonville, FL 32206.
This behind-the-scenes tour will be led by Sloan Hagerty of Wharton-Smith, with support from a JEA representative, and will provide an inside look at the operations of JEA’s largest water reclamation facility.
Opened in 1959, the Buckman WRF has a permitted capacity of 52.5 million gallons per day, with an average daily flow of about 30 million gallons. The facility also processes biosolids from other JEA water reclamation facilities. Currently, Wharton-Smith, Inc. is constructing a new Biosolids Facility that will process all biosolids into fertilizer, representing a major investment in sustainable wastewater management.
Tour Agenda:
- Brief overview of the facility in the onsite office trailer explaining how a wastewater treatment plant operates
- Guided walk through the treatment process, starting at the headworks where raw sewage enters the plant
- Walkthrough of major treatment stages leading to treated effluent discharge
- Discussion of the biosolids process and the new biosolids facility currently under construction
- Q&A with representatives from Wharton-Smith and JEA
Important Site Information:
- This is an active and busy facility currently under construction
- Parking is limited — carpooling is strongly encouraged
- Required PPE: hard hat, safety vest, long pants, and safety shoes/boots
- Limited extra hard hats and vests will be available onsite
This field tour offers a rare opportunity to see large-scale water infrastructure in action and gain practical insight into the systems that support community growth and environmental stewardship.
RSVP Required. Space is limited.
