ABOUT SGT SPLENDOR
"An eclectic Alt-Funk, Desert Roots, Dirty Blues, Rock thing"
Blending alt-funk, desert roots, dirty blues, and rock, Sgt. Splendor delivers a sound that is both groovy and brooding, mysterious and unforgettable. Led by guitarist Eric McFadden and singer-songwriter Kate Vargas, the band creates a dark, soulful musical landscape where raw groove meets fearless experimentation.
Before joining forces, both artists had already built formidable solo careers. Vargas earned critical acclaim from outlets including NPR, Rolling Stone, SPIN, No Depression, and Vice, with legendary critic Robert Christgau praising her work. McFadden is a powerhouse guitarist whose resume includes collaborations with George Clinton & the P-Funk All Stars, Anders Osborne, Angelo Moore of Fishbone, and Eric Burdon & The Animals, along with sessions and performances alongside artists from Jackson Browne to Joe Strummer.
Their second album, Death of the Hoochie Koo, expands the band’s sonic world, drawing inspiration from the surreal storytelling and carnival spirit of Tom Waits, while channeling the mysterious energy of the American Southwest.
Backed by an ever-evolving lineup of world-class musicians including members connected to Widespread Panic, Fishbone, Jack White, Les Claypool, Tedeschi Trucks Band, and Talking Heads, Sgt. Splendor’s live shows are raw, adventurous, and electrifying.
