Overview

Get ready to craft swoon-worthy love stories and spice up your writing skills in this fun, hands-on class!

Are you a romance reader eager to learn how to write the genre you love? In this four-week class (eight hours of work total), you’ll learn the basics of plotting and writing a romance novel from scratch. No matter what romance subgenre calls your name, you’ll learn to expand an initial idea, center a romantic arc, and build strong, complementary characters. You’ll leave this collaborative, workshop-based class with a plan for a novel (including character exercises, a beat sheet, and a synopsis) and at least one chapter of written prose. You’ll also get an overview of resources available to you once you finish your novel.

Testimonials from previous participants:

"For years, I've read romance novels every single day and quietly dreamed of writing one of my own but life was always in the way and I didn't know how to just start. This class turned that dream into action. I didn’t just learn how to write a romance novel — I finally started one. I created my idea, wrote my first chapter, and connected with incredible writers who inspired me to take myself seriously. I’m no longer just a reader. I’m a writer and I look forward to staying connected with this group as we finish our books."

"Loved this class! Fun, informative, low-pressure intro to romance writing. One of my favorite parts was connecting with other beginning romance writers. I made progress on a story and am excited to continue."

INSTRUCTOR BIO: Audrey Nelson is a second-generation romance writer and the author of Romancelandia: An Ethnographic Novella. She taught a romance-writing class for undergraduates at Wesleyan University, where she also completed Romancelandia—an anthropology thesis on the contemporary romance writing industry. She lives in Ballard with her high school sweetheart and spends her time writing, making radio, and battling romance skeptics.
