This workshop examines how creative, art therapy–based interventions support children and adolescents who have experienced trauma and deprivation. Grounded in attachment and relational frameworks, participants will explore how trauma shapes interpersonal functioning, sense of self, and therapeutic engagement. Through didactic presentation and clinical case material, the workshop highlights how creative interventions provide containment, foster healthy attachment, and support emotional regulation and connection.
Brief Outline of Workshop Content:
• Introduction to art therapy and attachment-based perspectives
• Trauma, deprivation, and interpersonal functioning in children and adolescents
• The concept of containment and the therapeutic relationship
• Trauma’s impact on sense of self and relational systems
• Creative interventions supporting regulation and connection
• Clinical case presentations (child treatment examples)
• Discussion and integration of learning
Learning Objectives
After attending this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Define art therapy and identify at least three ways creative interventions foster healthy attachment.
- Discuss the interpersonal impacts of trauma and name 3 ways in which this may appear in the therapeutic space.
- Identify four ways traumatic experiences affect sense of self and create a closed interpersonal system.
- Gain understanding of art therapy as it relates to sense of self and connection to others.
**This event will be recorded. Those unable to attend live may register as usual and contact the PPSC Learning Lab Program Development Administrator at ppsc.learninglab@gmail.com to request access. The recording will be available for two (2) weeks following the event.
You may still earn CE credit by watching the recording, provided that:
- The program is offered by an NYSED-approved provider for your specific license type, and;
- The recording is classified as a self-study course (i.e., there is no live interaction).
Under NYSED regulations, licensees may complete up to 12 hours of their required continuing education per registration period through self-study activities. The remaining hours must be obtained through live, interactive learning.
To be eligible to receive Continuing Education (CE) credits, participants must complete the post-event evaluation within this two-week period. Upon completion of the recording and required post-event evaluation, a CE certificate will be issued for qualifying participants.
