Overview

Conjuring Q: Calligraphic, Typographic and Printmaking Exploration. An illustrated lecture by Suzanne Moore

Beginning in 1999, Suzanne began considering the essence of the letter Q, and how one might portray it in original work on paper and with printmaking techniques. The work has continued, parallel to other studio work, in the creation of manuscript books and a variant edition. The Rilke passage, from Letters to a Young Poet, “. . . love the questions themselves like locked rooms, or books that are written in a foreign tongue”, and Pablo Neruda’s Book of Questions offered inspiration along the way. The result is 8 manuscript books (and counting), hand-colored prints, original pieces and the recent edition book, Rescuing Q…Quandaries and Queries. A copy of this book was recently purchased with combined efforts of FOC and San Francisco Public Library.

Join us for a glimpse into the rich trove of Q explorations, with an array of tools, using sumi ink, gouache, acrylic painting, drawing and printmaking techniques.

Suzanne Moore is a lettering artist, painter, and printmaker whose eclectic interests meld in the diversity of her artists' books. Suzanne weaves word and painted image with form, content and structure into spaces which invite the reader to engage, examine and inquire. Her books blend abstract and representational imagery, rich color and surface treatments with textual content and contemporary lettering to create work that obscures the line between word and image, legibility and abstraction.
