This experiential workshop guides group therapists in applying Gestalt theory to group work. Through lecture, dyadic exercises, and group process, we will uncover ways that Gestalt therapy theory informs and enlivens our interventions as group leaders. First, we will explore how our focus on phenomenology, somatic experience, field theory, creative adjustment, polarities, and the paradoxical theory of change lead us to the interventions we make as Gestalt group leaders. Second, we will discuss and practice putting in place the structures that assist us in staying true to our theory, developing a secure ground, and creating and maintaining the conditions for dialogue.

Objectives:

  1. Describe how Gestalt theory informs group therapy interventions.
  2. Identify and describe three necessary elements of Gestalt Group Therapy structure.
  3. Learn three ways to enhance communication through embodied dialogue.

Patricia Tucker, LCSW holds a BA from Bard College (’78), an MSSW from Columbia University (’81), and is a graduate of Gestalt Associates for Psychotherapy in New York City (1985). Patricia has been a faculty member at Gestalt Associates since 1987 and was Director of Training there from 1999-2011. Patricia was President of AAGT from 2014-2016. She has been an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the NYU Silver School of Social Work since 2012. She has been running groups and teaching group therapy since 2002 and she is thrilled to be delving deeper into conceptions of identity in Gestalt group therapy!
