Crafted Conversations: Alan Cohen
Join us for an evening of art and conversation, with wine, hors d’oeuvres, and a warm welcome at CraftWork.
Step into the creative world of Alan B. Cohen, a Healdsburg-based architect whose artistic practice transforms driftwood, junk and found coastal materials into striking sculptural works.
Join us for an intimate evening around the fireplace as Alan shares the stories behind his driftwood and junk creations - whimsical birds, imaginary creatures, masks, and abstract forms shaped by wind, water, and time. Each piece begins with something discovered along Northern California beaches, at flea markets, or along the railroad tracks that run through town. The material is shaped and sanded - sometimes burned, sometimes painted or oiled - with found objects added to complete the story. Some pieces are elegant; others are whimsical, all feeling both playful and deeply connected to the natural world.
Alan has spent more than four decades designing homes, wineries, and community spaces across Sonoma County - and it’s fair to say that few Healdsburg residents have had a greater hand in shaping how our city looks today. Alongside his architectural work, he has developed a unique artistic practice that blends craftsmanship, curiosity, and a deep appreciation for natural materials.
During the evening, Alan will share how he discovers the materials for his sculptures, how each piece comes together, and how architecture and art intersect in his creative life. Guests will also have the opportunity to view several of his works up close, enjoy a glass of wine from a local favorite, fantastic hors d’oeuvres from another local favorite, learn more about the city they live in, and meet the people who leave a mark on this place.
