Finland Center Foundation: Harlem Walking Tour

Sylvia's RestaurantNew York, NY
Saturday, Mar 14 from 12 pm to 3:30 pm
Overview

We are pleased to invite you to an insightful Harlem Walking Tour on Saturday, March 14th!

Join us for a walking tour of Harlem, incorporating the history of Finns in Harlem 100 years ago and Black Harlem history. The tour will be led by Yolany Bernardez and Jaana Rehnstrom and will last about 2 hours.

But first, we start with lunch at the famous Sylvia's restaurant and experience classic Harlem cuisine at 12 noon. From there, we will walk to the heart of the former Finnish community in Harlem 100 years ago: the corner of 5th Avenue and 127th St. where the old Finn Hall still stands, although now in residential use. Thereafter we will walk where our ancestors walked along 125th Street and get immersed in Harlem's Black history: the nearby Apollo Theater and the newly re-opened Studio Museum of Harlem which has a fabulous collection of Black art. We will then walk over to the Schomburg Center, part of the New York Public Library. There will be other interesting short stops along the way, and ultimately we end up at The Kota Nest, the home of Finland Center Foundation at 43 St Nicholas Place (@152nd St).

At $115 per person, your ticket is all-inclusive of lunch at Melba's, museum admission fees, and professional guide services.

We invite everyone to join us there at 3pm for a short slideshow delving further into the history of Finns in Harlem. We will then start the Annual Meeting of Finland Center Foundation; members can vote, and guests can participate in the deliberations but not vote. We will do all this while enjoying some coffee/tea and pulla and a musical performance from Markus Kaitila (piano) and our intern Sofia Sinishin (saxophone). Sign up for the meeting here!

Note: The tour involves a lot of walking, so wear comfortable shoes and layered clothing, and sunscreen if it's sunny! Bring your water bottle. For the lunch, it will be prepared in advance and ready on arrival, and included in the price. After you register, we will send a menu and ask about dietary needs. Please don't be late or your food will get cold! 😄

Kiitos - Tack - Thank You!
