<h3>Dreams and Synchronicities of Scientists and Science</h3><h3> </h3>A hybrid Conference, in-person or via zoom from 9:30am to 4:30pm.The Conference will also be recorded. The Jungian Psychoanalytic Association (JPA) presents a conference on Dreams and Synchronicities, emerging from conjunctions of Mind and Matter, psyche and world. Insights found in dreams produce material results in the sciences, internal images are expressed in languages and arts. In our program, a physicist, philosopher/chemist, and Jungian analysts enter the dreams and conjunctions where cognition and emotion, memory and imagination move toward empirical laboratory results, as if the dreaming mind may penetrate matter as well as deal with what matters.Please note that the Conference will be recorded. In-Person attendance: at the NYC Seminar and Conference Center114 West 26th Street, New York, NY 10001--------------------------MORNING PROGRAM9:30 am - Welcome and Introductions - Allison Avery, MA, President of the Jungian Psychoanalytic Association9:45 am - Keynote Address: The Neutral Field - Harald Atmanspacher, Ph.D. The philosophical framework of dual-aspect monism proposed by Jung and the physicist Wolfgang Pauli relates the concepts of archetypes and synchronicity. The mental and the physical are grounded in a “neutral” field of archetypal activity, neither mental nor physical, on a mind-matter (and mind-body) continuum emerges, with correlations between the two. Dual aspect monism establishes a novel worldview radically at variance with overly rigid reductive scientism and arbitrary unfounded new-age inanities.Among the various ways and perspectives to address this field, we can refer to mathematical structures whose truth is sometimes intuited before rationally proven to be correct. The dream of a young mathematically gifted student of analytical psychology illustrates this understanding of mathematics beyond both its mental perception and its physical application: the archetypal dimension of mathematical symbols, be they geometric (polytopes), algebraic (groups), topological (knots), or arithmetic (primes).10:45 am – Pause11:00 am – Breaking Symmetry: A Physicist’s Dreams of a Chinese Woman – Beverley Zabriskie, LCSW.Wolfgang Pauli’s dreams of a dancing Chinese woman may be seen as invitations to move into and beyond his concept of symmetry in physics, ultimately displaced by the discovery of symmetry- breaking, the separation of the mental and physical world in our constructs of time and space. They may also have been preparing him for illness and death. “The Chinese woman walks on ahead and beckons me to follow.” Dream imagery is both metaphor and reality, addressing transitions in scientific theory, internal transformation, and passage through psycho-physical states of realities.12:15 pm- Lunch: A list of nearby restaurants will be provided AFTERNOON PROGRAM1:15 pm - "My Brain is Falling out"- Matthias Leutrum, MFA, LP.Santiago Ramón y Cajal’s dream diary: proto-consciousness on the mind-body continuum.Cajal (1852-1934), considered the first "neuroscientist", addressed the Royal Society of London in 1894: “The ability of neurons to grow in an adult and their power to create new connections can explain learning,” positing the synaptic theory of memory. He received the 1906 Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine, for his research on the nervous system. In his dream diary he held imaginal conversations with Freud, seeking to make meaning of dreaming and his dreams. His approach resonated with Jung’s sense of psyche as “a phenomenal world in itself, which can be reduced neither to the brain, nor to metaphysics.”2:15 pm - Dreams of Alchemists, Magicians, and Occult Sciences in Eurasian context- Farzad Mahootian, Ph.D.Premodern practitioners of alchemy, magic and sister occult sciences considered dreams as empirical. Zosimus, al-Buni, John Dee, Descartes, and Yang Xi, among others, recorded their dreams and visions. Historians of science argue compellingly for allegorical readings of some of these accounts, and unsuccessfully against Jung’s archetypal analysis.3:15 pm - Mendeleyev and the Dream of Order in Matter - Nilton Maltz, MSc., LP.In1869 the Russian scientist Dmitri Mendeleyev is struggling to bring order to the understanding of chemistry. He falls asleep at his desk and has a dream of the periodic table. Since ancient Egypt, going through alchemy and to modern chemistry, the fantasy of seeing order in matter is found in a dream.4:00 pm - Roundtable Discussion of Presenters with Audience.4: 30 pm - Closing Panel.

PRESENTERS BIOGRAPHIESHARALD ATMANSPACHER, Ph.D, is an emeritus member of the Turing Center at ETH Zurich. As a theoretical physicist he is known for his work on complex dynamical systems, non-reductive approaches in the philosophy of science, foundational questions of quantum theory, and non-commutative structures in physics and cognition. He is one of the principal architects of a systematic and coherent account of mind-matter relations called dual-aspect monism. He President of the Society for Mind-Matter Research and editor of its journal Mind and Matter. He has been involved in the program "The Human condition in the 21st Century".ALLISON F. AVERY, M.A., is a Jungian analyst, leadership coach, and organizational consultant whose firm, Avery Advisory, integrates Jungian theory and organizational science to cultivate self-awareness and purposeful action among individuals and organizations. She is President of the (JPA), member of the faculty, and a strategic advisory board member with NYU Stern’s Initiative on Purpose and Flourishing. Her expertise includes projection, organizational psychodynamics, conscious leadership, and human flourishing.MATTHIAS LEUTRUM, MFA, LP is a certified Jungian analyst in New York City. A graduate of the JPA, he is the JPA Director of Training, and serves on the faculty. Leutrum received his MFA in painting from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts, Paris. He has presented numerous papers for the Art and Psyche conferences, the JAP Latin America Conference in 2021, as well as the 2022 IAAP Congress in Buenos Aires and the Zurich 2025 Congress. “Giacometti’s Gaze” and “The analyst as user illusion: therapy in the time of COVID-19”, have appeared in the Journal of Analytical Psychology.FARZAD MAHOOTIAN, Ph.D, is a Clinical Associate Professor of Global Liberal Studies at New York University. With an interdisciplinary background (PhD Philosophy, Fordham; MS Chemistry, Georgetown), his research focuses on interactions between philosophy, science and society within the mythological imagination of technoscience and with guidance from process philosophy, biomimicry, artificial intelligence, and premodern sciences. Keyser) in Ehsani, S., et al, The Future Circle of Healthcare (2022: Springer).NILTON MALTZ, MSc., LP, a graduate of the JPA, is a certified Jungian Analyst and Licensed Psychoanalyst who lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He studied contemporary art practices at the School of Visual Arts at Parque Lage- Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil. He also earned a BS in Electrical engineering and an MS in engineering of materials at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. Nilton has written several technical papers and presented on the arts and depth psychology for the general public and Jungian professional audiences. He is a member of the JPA faculty and of its public programs committee.BEVERLEY ZABRISKIE, LCSW, is a Jungian Analyst in Manhattan, a founding faculty member and former President of the JPA. She is a past president of the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis (NAAP), past Vice-President of the Philemon Foundation which produced The Red Book, The Black Books, and the Philemon Series of Jung’s writings. She has been an associate editor of the London Journal of Analytic Psychology and the San Francisco Jung Journal. She is on the Executive Committee of the Helix Center for Interdisciplinary Investigation.
