Overview

Hear from Cornell Lab of Ornithology visiting scientist Andrew Farnsworth about Westchester bird life!

Join us for a lively discussion about Birds—among the most visible and beloved wildlife in Bedford, offering a daily source of beauty, curiosity, and discovery.

The evening will feature Dr. Andrew Farnsworth, visiting scientist at the Center for Avian Population Studies at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. He has studied bird migration and employs science to educate and engage audiences in conservation actions, notably regarding reducing light pollution impacts on nocturnally migrating birds. He's been involved with BirdCast, a tool for monitoring migration, and has also worked closely with Cornell's eBird and Merlin app teams.

Farnsworth, along with Mianus River Gorge’s Budd Veverka, will explore how birds can serve as a powerful lens on the health of our landscapes—revealing the richness of local biodiversity, the importance of different habitats, and the many ways wildlife and human communities coexist. Using research from the Cornell Lab and tools like eBird and Merlin, Farnsworth will show how careful observation—from backyard feeders to woodland trails—can deepen our understanding of the natural world. Whether you’re an avid birder or simply someone who enjoys the sights and sounds of birds around your home, you’ll come away with a new appreciation for the role birds play in connecting us to the land. The event will close with audience Q&A.

The evening will be moderated by David Pogue, the Emmy Award–winning journalist, author, and television host best known for his work with CBS Sunday Morning, The New York Times, and NOVA. A Bedford resident, Pogue brings curiosity, clarity, and wit to conversations that bridge science, culture, and everyday life.

Bedford Field Notes is presented by the Mianus River Gorge, in partnership with Bedford Audobon, the Bedford Historical Society, the Bedford Garden Club, and the Rusticus Garden Club.
