OHC26: Kosala Weerasekara Chartered Architects [Tour]
Visit this architecture office and residence as part of Open House Colombo 2026.
On the edge of a small lake, surrounded by lush forest and a variety of fauna, is the studio and home of architect Kosala Weerasekara. The building sits gently on the triangular site and is designed to reduce its environmental impact by maximising natural ventilation and light.
The design intent was to create a dynamic "canvas" that weaves together framed multi-level views, diverse architectural elements, and thoughtfully chosen materials. Cantilevered spaces, wooden decks, and transparent materials blur the line between the indoors and out, blending the built structure with its surrounding landscape.
The building’s sleek, modern design, coupled with the use of recycled and low cost materials, is a study in contemporary, affordable architecture. The roofing is made from insulated corrugated iron sheets to protect the interior from the heat. The interior is kept deliberately minimalist, with the use of reused palette wood on the ceiling and walls bringing character and warmth to the rooms. Much of the house is glass and the lightweight iron frame is fitted with a combination of floor to ceiling-fixed-glass panels and reused antique windows, offering expansive garden views and maximising air flow.
Visitors to the site will find the offices for Kosala Weerasekara Chartered Architects, as well as the family residence for Weerasekara and his wife. Designed by Weerasekara to fit the needs of the couple, the property provides privacy and comfort, while also offering space for creative contemplation.
