Book Making: Flag Book - Sun, June 7, 2026
Make a Flag Book with a concertina spine, multiple small pages, and hard covers Selena Matranga
A flag book is a unique, sculptural artist book structure invented by Hedi Kyle in 1979, featuring alternating accordion-folded panels (concertina) with pages or "flags" attached in rows that move and extend outward. When read page by page, the viewer sees disjointed fragments of image and text. When the spine is pulled fully open, these fragments assemble a panoramic spread. This transformation is accompanied by a delightful flapping sound. The spine and covers provide opportunities for additional imagery. In this half-day workshop, students will make their own flag book with a concertina spine, multiple small pages, and hard covers.
