By the way, Paul was just awareded a 2026 Obie Award from the American Theater Wing, and coincidentally, the 2026 John Cage Award for Theater/Performance from the Foundation for Contempoarary Arts.His residency at the John Cage Trust culminates with this special showing at Time and Space Limited in Hudson, NY. Paul Lazar is a founding member, along with Annie-B Parson, of Big Dance Theater. He has directed, co-directed and acted in works for Big Dance since 1991, including commissions from the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Walker Art Center, Dance Theater Workshop, Classic Stage Company and Japan Society. Paul’s one person performance, Cage Shuffle, premiered at the American Realness Festival in 2017 and continues to tour the U.S. and Europe. He performed Cage Shuffle at The Japan Society in the Fall of 2023 as part of the season dedicated to John Cage https://www.cageshuffle.com Outside of BDT Paul has directed The Barbarians by Jerry Lieblich at La Mama (for which he won an Obie Award for Directing 2025); Christina Masciotti’s Social Security at the Bushwick Starr, Elephant Room at St. Ann’s Warehouse for the company Rainpan 43 in , and Young Jean Lee’, We’re Gonna Die . He also directed a version of We’re Gonna Die, featuring David Byrne, at the Meltdown Festival in London; Bodycast: An Artist Lecture by Suzanne Bocanegra starring Frances McDormand for the BAM Next Wave Festival; and Major Bang for The Foundry Theatre at St. Ann’s Warehouse. Paul has acted in over 40 feature films, including Snowpiercer, The Host, Mickey Blue Eyes, Silence of the Lambs, Beloved, Lorenzo’s Oil and Philadelphia. Stage Acting; Macbeth on Broadway; Tamburlaine at Theatre For A New Audience, Young Jean Lee’s Lear, The Three Sisters at Classic Stage Company; Richard Maxwell’s Cowboys and Indians at Soho Rep; Richard III at Classic Stage Company; Svejk at Theatre for a New Audience; Irene Fornes’ Mud at the Signature Theater and Mabou Mines; Mac Wellman’s 1965 UU at The Chocolate Factory. Paul has performed with The Wooster Group, acting in Brace Up!, Emperor Jones, North Atlantic and The Hairy Ape. Awards include two Bessies (2010, 2002), the Jacob’s Pillow Creativity Award in 2007, and the Prelude Festival’s Frankie Award in 2014, as well an Obie Award for Big Dance in 2000. Paul currently teaches at New York University. He taught in the Theatre, Dance and Media Department at Harvard University (Spring 2018). He has also taught at Yale, Rutgers, Barnard, The William Esper Studio and The Michael Howard Studio.____Founded by Molly Hickok, Paul Lazar, and Annie-B Parson in 1991, Big Dance Theater is known for its inspired synthesis of dance, music, text, and visual design. The company’s work ranges from pure dance pieces, to dance/theater works with sources from found text, literature, plays, or an alchemy of wildly incongruent source material, weaving and braiding disparate strands of text and theatrical elements into multidimensional performance. Big Dance has delved into the literary work of such authors as Twain, Tanizaki, Euripides, Flaubert, and Anne Carson, and dance is used as both frame and metaphor to theatricalize these writings. For 33 years, Big Dance Theater has worked to create more than 25 large-scale dance/theater works, generating each piece over months and years of collaboration with its associate artists, a long-standing, ever-evolving family of actors, dancers, composers, and designers. Big Dance Theater has been presented at venues including Brooklyn Academy of Music, Dance Theater Workshop, The Kitchen, New York Live Arts, The Chocolate Factory, Classic Stage Company, Japan Society, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, The Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), Walker Art Center, Yerba Buena, On the Boards, UCLA Live, Spoleto Festival USA, and Tanz Im August, Berlin. Internationally, the group has performed in France, Italy, Belgium, The Netherlands, Brazil, Germany, and the Georgian Republic. Commissions have come from Les Subsistances in Lyon, Chaillot Theater in Paris, The Brooklyn Academy of Music, The Walker Art Center, Wexner Arts Center, Carolina Performing Arts, American Dance Festival, Spoleto Festival USA, The Kitchen, La MaMa, Onassis Foundation, Center for Ballet and the Arts at NYU, NCCAkron, Carolina Performing Arts, and the Old Vic/Dance Umbrella, London.____
