Parent University: Building Foundations for the FutureJoin us for Spring Parent University as we explore how the skills, supports, and decisions families make today can shape successful outcomes in the future. This year’s sessions will focus on helping parents understand the bigger picture — from building self-awareness and independence skills, to identifying supports and resources, to exploring post-graduation college and transition options.Whether your child is just beginning their journey or preparing for life after school, this Parent University will provide practical ideas and valuable insight to help families intentionally plan and support long-term success.

Networking & Sign In

This session will help families better understand post-secondary pathways available to students with neurological differences. Parents will learn about options including college programs, structured college experience programs, and employment pathways that support greater independence and meaningful work.
Participants will also gain insight into funding resources available through the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) and how these supports can play an important role in a young adult’s transition from high school to adulthood. Families will leave with practical information to help them begin planning their child’s next steps with greater clarity and confidence.


Navigating Post-Secondary Pathways: Creating a Life Your Young Adult Loves

Caring for a child with special needs is deeply rewarding — and it can also be exhausting. This session will explore the importance of respite and why intentional caregiver support is essential for the well-being of the entire family. Caregivers will learn about available respite resources, creative options for building support systems, and practical ideas for incorporating restorative breaks into everyday life.
Participants will leave with actionable strategies and real-world resources to help reduce caregiver stress, strengthen and support family balance (whether parents are married or single), and create sustainable support systems.

Respite Resources and Practical Ideas for Special Needs Families

In this session, Robin Rettie will introduce research-informed strategies to help families and young adults build skills for success in post-secondary education, employment, and independent living. Using the Anchor Teaching Framework (TATF), participants will explore how sensory systems, the central and peripheral nervous systems, and the limbic system influence behavior, emotional responses, and learning. The session will highlight how environmental triggers impact self-regulation and how supportive strategies can help young people better understand their needs and take ownership of their behavior. By connecting neuroscience with social-emotional learning and practical skill development, this presentation will provide families with tools to help adolescents and young adults build self-awareness, increase independence, and successfully transition into adulthood.
