  • Location: Lafayette Greens Garden - 132 W Lafayette Blvd, Detroit, MI 48226 - you can find street parking along Lafayette St. & Shelby St. There are also paid parking lots along Lafayette St.
  • What to Bring: Comfortable, close toed shoes & dress for the weather, refillable water bottle, gardening gloves.
  • What we will be doing: Helping Judy, our garden manager, with mid-season gardening tasks such as planting, weeding, harvesting, and site cleanup.

Lafayette Greens is a green space and urban garden in the heart of downtown Detroit, next door to the famous Coney Islands and across the street from the fabulous Westin Book Cadillac Hotel. Visitors, city workers, and neighborhood residents enjoy and relax in the space, watch veggies and flowers grow during the summer and enjoy seasonal programming. The award-winning garden, created by Kenneth Weikal Landscape Architecture, was donated to The Greening of Detroit by Compuware in 2014.

The Greening grows chemical-free fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers every year. In 2019 we started focusing on pollinator habitat which is so rare in the city. We are a certified pollinator garden and focus on growing plants for butterflies, native and honey bees and birds. Our programming features classes on native bees, birds and pollinator plants. We also offer a series called DIG - Detroiters in the Garden - a community education program in partnership with Fort Street Presbyterian Church’s Open Door program. See more below.

Lafayette Greens is invaluable asset to the city of Detroit. This green space is a place of respite and solitude; a place where people reconnect with beauty and experience nature; a place of education and discovery. Stop in and see what we are up to.
