Slack Friday with Makana – An Exclusive Intermediate Workshop
A rare opportunity for guitarists to learn slack key guitar fundamentals, basic style techniques, cultural and historical knowledge, and Hawaiian style slack key guitar tunings in an intimate setting! Not to mention fun, forgotten stories. Makana rarely holds workshops, and this will be limited to twenty attendees, with Makana providing both group and individual guidance.
His kumu lineage includes Bobby Moderow Jr, Raymond Kāne and Sonny Chillingworth, and he is well versed in a broad range of family styles including those of Gabby Pahinui, Leonard Kwan and other renowned legends of old. Makana’s style extends far beyond the traditional Hawaiian to include countless original tunings and influences from cultural musical traditions around the globe. Join us at Waikīkī Community Center for a wonderful afternoon of cultural sharing, learning, and beautiful music!
Workshops of this caliber typically command significantly higher tuition, but thanks in part to support from the HTA Kūkulu Ola Project, we are able to offer this special community rate of $50 per student.
PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS:
-must bring own guitar- no electric guitars, acoustic only. no amplification allowed.
-should have a basic knowledge of and experience with the guitar- beginner is fine but please don’t let this be the first time you’ve ever touched a guitar! All levels and ages of guitarists welcome!
This is a rare opportunity to refine your craft with one of Hawaiʻi’s most respected contemporary slack key artists.
