This award, along with the Philip Pistilli Silver Veteran's Medal, has been given annually since 1973 on or about the anniversary of President Truman’s birth.
In addition to these awards, college scholarships in international relations, public service and the humanities will be presented to students at the University of Missouri–Kansas City, University of Kansas, University of Missouri, Augustana College, and Westminster College.
International students from local colleges are invited as special guests, continuing President Truman’s tradition of welcoming students from around the world at his birthday celebrations in Kansas City and at the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum.
