The modern brick apartment-hotel building, Waluhaje, opened in Atlanta in July 1952 to provide temporary and semi-permanent housing for Blacks during a period when such accommodations were scarce. One of the first of its kind in the country, the massive structure provided essential community-gathering space during the volatile Civil Rights era until its closing in the mid-1960s.
