A Celebration of Sport, Creativity, and Culture — As the World Gathers in Miami, Contemporary African Art Takes the Stage

Scott Galvin Community Center

When the world gathered in Miami for the greatest sporting event on earth, Africa was not a footnote. Through Art and the Beautiful Game: Africa on the World Stage, AfriKin Foundation ensured that the voice, the creativity, and the cultural authority of Global Africa and its diaspora were heard, loudly, beautifully, and without apology. We are the signature African diaspora cultural institution officially listed on the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau World Cup cultural platform. That is not a coincidence. That is a decade of institution-building paying dividends at the exact moment it matters most.Football was born in the streets of Africa long before it was codified in European boardrooms. The continent has produced some of the game's greatest talents, yet too rarely been given its full seat at the table of global football culture. That changes now. We are on offense. We have removed the word "allowed" from our vocabulary.

Bamazi Talle — The Flying Calabash

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup now complete and Spain crowned champions, Art and the Beautiful Game enters its final chapter at Maison AfriKin with a dedicated spotlight on Togolese-born artist Bamazi Talle and his collection, The Flying Calabash. The series is 48 paintings strong, one for every nation that competed in the first-ever 48-team FIFA World Cup.In every canvas, a yellow calabash bowl floats at the center, set against a backdrop painted in the colors of a competing nation's flag, with that flag itself rendered as a small pennant above the bowl. Painted and pinned images of traditional African masks accompany the bowl, building a floating, contemplative composition. The calabash, a simple yet mysterious object traditionally used to transport or store food and ritual objects, becomes a vessel for something larger here: memory, cultural heritage, and the ways an everyday object carries stories across time.

Why the CalabashLong before it became a painting, the calabash was already essential to daily life across the African continent. Grown from a vine and hollowed by hand, it has carried water from the well, stored grain and palm wine, and cooled milk in kitchens for thousands of years, part of the same culinary heritage AfriKin traces across the diaspora. West African households, including those in Togo, where Bamazi Talle was born, still use the calabash today: as a bowl, a ladle, the resonating body of instruments like the kora, and the vessel poured from at namings, weddings, and other rites of passage. A calabash is rarely bought new and discarded. It is kept, carved, mended, and handed down, carrying the marks of every hand that has held it.That instinct is the same one behind Maison AfriKin: a household object built at institutional scale, a place meant to hold culture the way a calabash holds what a family cannot afford to lose, and to pass it forward intact. The Flying Calabash applies that same logic to a global stage, forty-eight bowls, one for every nation that competed in this World Cup, each carrying the shared spirit of Global Africa as it moved through the tournament. It is why this exhibition centers a household object instead of a trophy. The object built to be filled again is the one that outlasts the moment.
