Explore Bay Area Modernism on a walking tour highlighting architect Roger Y. Lee’s innovative Second Bay Region and Midcentury designs.
Join Docomomo US/NOCA for a walking tour to explore the legacy of Roger Y. Lee (1920-1981), a brilliant architect whose contributions to Bay Area Modernism have left an indelible mark on California and Hawaii.
Roger Y. Lee, born in San Francisco and a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, navigated the challenges of his time with resilience and creativity. Serving as an engineer during World War II, Lee returned to California to establish his architectural practice amid societal barriers and discrimination.
Our walking tour offers a glimpse into Lee's innovative approach to design, with a focus on his distinctive "Bay Region Style" tract homes. With an eye for detail and a commitment to maximizing small spaces while respecting the natural landscape, Lee's work transcended traditional architectural norms of nuclear family homes. Lee designed over 100 residential homes and numerous other projects scattered across the Bay Area, each a testament to Lee's vision and skill. Participants on the tour will uncover the hidden gems of Lee's portfolio and gain a deeper understanding of his influence on Second Bay Region Tradition design and Mid-Century Modernism.
On the tour, we will explore the exteriors of Reed Place Housing Group, three identical homes designed by Lee. Interior tours will be available for two of the homes.
The purpose of this tour is to celebrate a prolific and acclaimed – yet currently under-recognized – architect whose name and work should be synonymous with the development of Second Bay Region Tradition design and Mid-Century Modernism in California.
