MILA - Media and Information Literacy Alliance

An online meeting to explore how the renewal of the BBC Charter might impact on media literacy

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) is reviewing the BBC's Royal Charter, which expires at the end of 2027. DCMS has set out a <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/britains-story-the-next-chapter-the-bbc-royal-charter-review-green-paper-and-public-consultation" title="https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/britains-story-the-next-chapter-the-bbc-royal-charter-review-green-paper-and-public-consultation" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Green Paper</a> and launched a consultation, with a response deadline on 10 March, to inform the changes that the government is considering making to the Charter, to futureproof the BBC and help it continue serving the public.The Green Paper considers proposals and questions on the BBC’s role in support of promoting a healthy information environment, tackling mis/disinformation and fostering media literacy. This free online meeting, run by the Media and Information Alliance (MILA) and Demos' Epistemic Security Network, will allow participants to reflect on the proposals relating to media literacy specifically and to discuss the relative opportunities and risks.The meeting is designed to:<ul><li>help participants to have an understanding of the proposals alongside how the BBC currently supports media literacy outcomes</li><li>enable participants to discuss and develop their own perspectives</li><li>inform participants about contributing to the consultation process, including a consideration about whether to collaborate on a joint response</li></ul>MILA and Demos are delighted to welcome Iain Bundred, the BBC's Director of Policy &amp; Public Affairs, and Lindsay McCoy, Executive Director of BBC Verify, who will share information about how the BBC currently supports media literacy. The BBC team will then leave the call ahead of the discussion segment of the meeting.
