Opening Reception - Art of Intorsion

Unbound Visual Arts (UVA) is a unique Allston-Brighton based non-profit art organization, serving the Greater Boston community with programs and exhibits to encourage learning, engagement, and change. Since our founding in 2012, we’ve focused on presenting contemporary art that critically engages with our present moment – believing that art has the potential to interrogate social norms, redefine perspectives, and transmit new ideas. Our exhibitions are characterized by their engagement with crucial cultural and social topics, including environmental sustainability, health and wellness, and the structures of gender and race.

<a href="https://www.unboundvisualarts.org/artofintorsion" title="https://www.unboundvisualarts.org/artofintorsion" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Art of Intorsion</a> presents a series of works produced by Maudegrasse from 2016 till present. Focusing on the structurally inherent tension and energy within twisted forms, Maudegrasse plays with notions of balance and framework. The use of patina and the interplay of light and shadow on the contorted bronze surfaces creates a sense of movement – snaking lines and connecting points, shifting from rigid lines to fluid curves. Even though Maudegrasse’s inspiration comes from observation of some natural phenomena, the work showcases some configurational mysteries which exist in organic forms, abstract poses, and movement dynamics. Maudegrasse has advanced college degrees in the arts and sciences. He is a self-taught sculptor who developed a unique personal style labeled “the allure of intorsion.” Maudegrasse’s sculptures are mainly executed in bronze and are typically rendered in a small-to-medium scale.
