5/30 Spring Mushroom Foray: Saturday MORNING (featuring instructor Marcus)
Experience an enchanting and educational day learning about spring mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest.
Come experience an enchanting and educational day learning about spring mushrooms and their habitat in the Pacific Northwest—with a twist!
We will spend time developing a well-rounded understanding of fungi, their structure, function in the environment and how to responsibly forage and your instructor will be Marcus (little Bear).
Some of you may already know Marcus, either from attending a class he’s assisted in before or from his videos online via his mom’s social media (that would be me, Rachel, aka ‘Yellow Elanor’). Marcus is now 12 years old and well known amongst his peers for being a mushroom enthusiast and using any opportunity to teach folks about fungi. All class tuition costs will go directly to Marcus’ fundraising for his class trip to Washington DC.
This event is a foray, meaning we will learn about any spring mushrooms we come across, not one particular species alone. However, there will be an emphasis on the identification and habitats of any edible mushrooms we come across, notably the morel and spring porcini. Ultimately education is the goal, not filling baskets with edibles. The deeper understanding of mushrooms and fungi we have will help us become more successful foragers as a whole.
In this class you’ll have both Marcus and myself instructing, there will be no lack of enthusiasm and excitement! (And Marcus has the best eye for spotting mushrooms, even better than me). Please join us for an amazing day, all while supporting Marcus’ fundraising for his class trip.
This is a beginner-friendly course and perfect for those wanting hands-on experience and guidance as they learn to identify and deepen their appreciation for fungi.
This course will meet in Trout Lake, Washington, meet location directions are given upon registration, please read your registration letter thoroughly.
We begin with a welcome then will carpool/caravan from our meet location to our field location. Our field location is generally 10-15 minutes from our meet location and within the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Thank you to the Forest Service for allowing me permission to run my educational programs within the GPNF.
Requirements:
- For this class, folks must be willing and able to walk off trail in the woods, in sometimes rugged terrain. We will not be on even ground or on clear paths the entire time, often walking off-trail and through brush. Class will happen rain or shine, so you must be willing and prepared to spend the day in the rain.
- You will also be required to obtain an online mushroom permit and bring the printed permit with you to class, link for online permit sent in registration confirmation.
- Bring your curiosity and kindness. I have high expectations for those attending these forays to take care of the forest and each other, curiosity, kindness and inclusion will make this a great experience for all.
As stated, this is a beginner friendly class, but a way to prepare for the event would be to watch my Mushrooms 101 and Morel Mushroom videos in preparation, linked below.
